Why Your Choice of English Test Matters
Most universities outside the English-speaking world — and many within it — require international applicants to demonstrate their English language proficiency. The two most widely recognised tests are IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). While both are accepted by thousands of institutions globally, there are key differences that might make one a better fit for you than the other.
Overview: IELTS
IELTS is co-owned by the British Council, IDP, and Cambridge Assessment English. It is available in two formats: IELTS Academic (for university admissions and professional registration) and IELTS General Training (for work, migration, and secondary education). The test includes four sections: Listening (30 mins), Reading (60 mins), Writing (60 mins), and Speaking (11–14 mins, conducted face-to-face with an examiner). Scores are given on a band scale of 1–9. Most UK and Australian universities require a minimum of 6.0–7.0 overall, depending on the programme.
Overview: TOEFL iBT
TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) is administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service) and is particularly popular with North American universities and colleges. It is entirely computer-based, including the speaking section, which is recorded rather than conducted with a live examiner. The test runs approximately 2 hours and covers Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Scores range from 0–120. Most US universities require 80–100+ depending on the programme.

Which Should You Choose?
Choose IELTS if: You are applying to UK, European, or Australian universities; you prefer speaking with a real human examiner; or you find integrated reading/writing tasks challenging and prefer separate skills assessment.
Choose TOEFL if: You are primarily applying to US institutions; you are comfortable with computers and prefer a fully digital experience; or you find the integrated writing tasks (which require you to read, listen, and then write) manageable.
If you are applying to a mix of UK and US universities, check each institution's specific requirements — most accept both, so you may have the flexibility to choose whichever you are likely to score higher on.
